Helen Kapalos
  • Broadcast journalism

    A national broadcaster

A recognised national news broadcaster, Helen has extensive experience across several media organisations — working for all three Australian commercial networks and both public broadcasters as a journalist, presenter and executive producer across more than two decades on air.

  • Filmmaking

    A Life of Its Own

Helen directed, produced and appeared in the groundbreaking medicinal cannabis documentary A Life of Its Own — acquired by Netflix, SBS and later Binge, and screened to global audiences. The film remains one of the most compelling accounts of a people-led movement to challenge lawmakers worldwide.

  • Public office

    Victoria's Multicultural Commissioner

Appointed by the Victorian State Government in 2015, Helen led the Victorian Multicultural Commission through a four-year term as Chairperson — the voice of the state’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities. She established an Australian-first internship program with ABC Australia, a Victorian Film Competition with leading universities, and the first private-sector strategy to reduce unconscious bias and tackle systemic employment issues.

  • Governance & academia

    Boards, fellowship & industry

Helen was appointed Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow for Multicultural Engagement at Swinburne University, and has held executive leadership roles in the medicinal cannabis industry — most recently as Director of Communications and Community at Australian Natural Therapeutics Group. She serves on the board of the Hellenic Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and holds an AICD Company Directors qualification and a Graduate Management credential from Melbourne Business School.
